Ashley Brauer, PhD, LP, DBSM is a clinical and sport psychologist who specializes in the treatment of mental health disorders and performance concerns among athletes. Additionally, Dr. Brauer has a specialized interest in working with athletes to facilitate health behavior change, such as improving rest, rehabilitation adherence, and optimizing sleep. Dr. Brauer is a Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine by the Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Brauer obtained her MS in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Lund University in Sweden and the University of Leipzig in Germany. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University with a focus in health and performance psychology. Kate earned her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from the University of Connecticut. While at UConn, Kate was highly involved in athletics, competing on the cross-country and track and field teams while also working as a sports nutrition intern under the Director of Sports Nutrition. During her dietetic internship, she worked at EDCare Denver where she gained experience treating high-performing athletes with eating disorders through the Athlete EDGE program. Kate also has experience working with individuals in eating disorder recovery as a mentor through the Eating Disorder Foundation. Additionally, Kate is a writer at Voice in Sport™, a platform that advocates for and supports girls and women in sports. At VIS, she writes two articles per month related to nutrition, mind, body, and advocacy.

Kate is currently working on her Master’s in Counseling Psychology at the University of Denver, deepening her knowledge of multiculturalism and social justice issues while also taking classes in the sports psychology department to deepen her understanding of athletes’ mental health. At DU, Kate is a member of the Bodies, Eating, and Emotions (BEE) Lab where she studies weight stigma, trauma, and disordered eating in marginalized populations. Kate is particularly interested in working with athletes to improve their relationship with food so they can achieve their biggest dreams in sports and life.

Dr. Jen Farrell specializes in the treatment of mental health and performance concerns in athletes and performers. Currently she is an Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Applied Sport Psychology program at UNC Greensboro (UNCG). In addition to these roles, she also provides mental health services and psychoeducational programming to student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff at UNCG.

Dr. Farrell obtained an MS in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois, a PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology from UNCG, and her MSW from Washington University in St. Louis. Her comprehensive education and training in clinical social work and sport psychology enables her to provide the best possible assistance to clients in need of mental health and mental performance services. Dr. Farrell is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), listed in the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Mental Health Registry and is a nationally Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Melinda Kirschner, Ph.D., M.S.W. is a licensed clinical and sport psychologist specializing in working with athletes with a focus on both performance and mental health concerns. Dr. Kirschner is collaborative in her approach to treatment and enjoys working alongside a multidisciplinary team to enhance the clinical care of her clients.

Dr. Kirschner received her B.A. from Georgetown University and obtained her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Hawaii prior to earning her doctorate degree in clinical psychology. She completed both her APA accredited pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services. Dr. Kirschner has worked at UCLA for the past 12 years specializing in eating disorder treatment and clinical care for student athletes.

As the Director of UCLA Athletics Mental Health Services, Dr. Kirschner oversees student athlete mental health and wellness programming including clinical services, outreach and prevention programming, peer-based programming, staff and coach education and team interventions. She consults regularly with the sports medicine team and has worked closely with the men and women’s indoor volleyball and beach volleyball teams. This past year, she worked with the UCLA Women’s Soccer team and was proud to be on the sidelines as the team brought home the 2022 National Championship.

Dr. Kirschner has a wide range of clinical interests, including family and relational concerns, eating disorders/body image, couples/intimacy issues, life transitions, mood and anxiety disorders, identity concerns, and substance use. Katie LeMair is a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics (CSSD) specializing in performance nutrition and RED-S/Eating Disorders in sport. For the past 6 years, Katie has worked as a collegiate sports dietitian at the NCAA Division I level. Her educational path included stops at South Dakota State University (B.S. in Dietetics), University of Nebraska-Lincoln (M.S. in Nutrition and Health Sciences, Dietetic Internship), and the University of Texas (Gatorade Sports Nutrition Immersion Program). Throughout these experiences she fell in love with the world of sports nutrition, having the privilege of working with athletes on many different sports teams.

Katie previously spent 4.5 years as an Assistant Sports Dietitian at K-State Athletics, working primarily with both basketball teams, women’s soccer, track and field, and women’s rowing. She counseled athletes on everything from general sports nutrition and hydration strategies to eating disorders/RED-S recovery. In this position, Katie saw a growing need for care surrounding eating disorders/disordered eating in sport, leading her to help create the program’s first multidisciplinary student athlete wellness team. Krissy is a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics (CSSD) and is also a personal trainer based in San Diego, CA.  She specializes in RED-S, injury prevention/recovery, and eating disorder treatment. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Science in human nutrition from Texas State University. Krissy is currently a doctoral candidate in health science and exercise leadership from Pennsylvania Western University.

Riley Nickols, PhD, CEDS-S is a counseling and sport psychologist who specializes in working with athletes to address mental health and performance concerns.

Dr. Nickols obtained an MS in Sport Psychology from Ithaca College in addition to an MS in Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University. He regularly speaks to athletes, coaches, and sports medicine personnel about disordered eating and unbalanced exercise in sport. Additionally, Dr. Nickols consults with eating disorder professionals on best practices for integrating exercise during eating disorder treatment and is sensitive to the unique demands of eating disorder recovery in relation to training and competing in sport.

Currently, Dr. Nickols is on EDCare’s Scientific Advisory Board and is the Senior Program Advisor for Athlete EDGE at EDCare in Denver, CO where specialized intensive eating disorder treatment is provided for athletes. He was previously the Director of the Victory Program, the nation’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility for athletes, from 2013-2021 at McCallum Place in St. Louis, Missouri.

Kaitlyn earned her BS in Dietetics from Michigan State University and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Minnesota – The Emily Program (eating disorder emphasis). While at Michigan State, Kaitlyn was highly involved in athletics, working as an administrative assistant for the athletic department and as a sport nutrition intern under the Director of Performance Nutrition. After college, she worked with the University of Minnesota football team, assisting with the day-to-day nutrition tasks, before later joining as a volunteer sports dietitian for athletes experiencing an eating disorder/RED-S. Kaitlyn also has experience working as a dietitian in an eating disorder intensive residential/residential unit, treating patients of all ages and identities. While there, she completed formal FBT (family based therapy) training and utilizes this in the work she does each day.

Jacquie holds a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Miami and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) through the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP). Jacquie created the sports psychology practicum site in the University of Miami athletic department and completed her training working with Division I student-athletes and teams.

Dr. Trujillo is a licensed counseling and sport psychologist who obtained her doctorate degree from Purdue University in Counseling Psychology in 2019 where she built specialties in grief/loss, self-injury, and working to address mental health needs and access with collegiate athletes. She completed her APA-accredited internship and post-doctoral study at the University of Northern Colorado where she provided individual, group, consultation, and crisis support services in both the counseling center with the general campus community and in the athletics department working with individuals, teams, coaches, and administration. She also has her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (2015) and two bachelors’ degrees (Elementary Education, Psychology; 2012) from the University of Wyoming.

During her time in collegiate athletics, Dr. Trujillo conducted individual, group, and team therapy to address concerns both in and out of sport. She provided guidance and training to athletic trainers, coaches, and the broader athletics department related to mental health concerns to help coordinate care, increase knowledge and awareness of mental health needs for current student-athletes. She often attended practices, games, and would occasionally travel with teams to provide ongoing support and observations to increase performance, cohesion, and support. She also worked to implement assessment materials to screen athletes for mental health concerns and worked to de-stigmatize mental health distress and increase access to services for student-athletes. This led to her taking a position at EDCare in 2021 as a primary therapist and the program lead for the Athlete EDGE program, a PHP/IOP program for high performance athletes with eating disorders. While there, she worked to build a sport-informed team of professionals to treat all aspects of identity/life for elite performers with eating disorders. She had the opportunity to refine and build athlete-specific group curriculum, provide education and consultation services throughout the country to those in athletics communities, and engage with professionals in athletics, psychiatry, dietetics, family therapy, physical therapy, and medicine across all levels of care to provide comprehensive and collaborative services.

Dr. Trujillo has been working in the mental health field since 2011 and has experience in in-patient facilities, intensive outpatient substance abuse programs, university counseling centers, residential treatment facilities for at-risk youth, alternative high schools, home-based therapy services, general outpatient services, and collegiate athletic settings. Rachel Walker, Psy.D., HSP, CMPC is a counseling and sport psychologist who specializes in working with athletes to address mental health and performance concerns.

Dr. Walker earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Whitman College, her Master of Science in Performance Psychology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and received her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Counseling Psychology/Athletic Counseling from Springfield College. Dr. Walker, endearingly nicknamed “Doc Walk,” has been thinking deeply (and laughing often!) about psychology and mental performance since 1998 as an elite level alpine ski racer who experienced mental blocks, injuries, and a transition out of sport to pursue academia.

She is currently the Director of Psychological Health & Performance at the University of Colorado Boulder in the athletics department. She was previously the Lead Sport Psychologist in the University of Delaware’s athletic department where she was the first full-time sport psychologist and created the program for the athletes. She completed post-doctoral training at Washington State University as the Outreach Coordinator and, prior to that, she completed her doctoral internship at Florida Atlantic University’s counseling center where she specialized in body image and eating concerns/disorders as well as sport psychology.
